Office Noise And How To Block It Out

by Frank Barnett

Working with co- workers in the same environment in any office is supposed to give you colleagues who will help you in solving difficult problems or assist you generally as and when needed. But the facts are not so in all cases, unfortunately a majority,i.e 80% of dedicated workers find that constant togetherness creates more problems then it solves. The noise created by co-workers is causing disturbances leading to lack of concentration for work and hence one wonders whether it is good to have co-workers or they are a hindrance only.

Nevertheless, posing that particular question is not going to help you since you cannot fire an individual from your corporation for making too much noise in the workplace if you are not the firm's owner. For that reason, you need to find viable ways to eliminate the distracting sounds rather than those who are creating them.

In order to start looking for a good solution, you must first bring the inconvenience brought on by your co-workers to your manager's attention. This will assure that difficulties in getting projects accomplished properly because of the noise distraction, don't get placed on your head.

You should confront your noisy coworker only after a talk with the boss. Nobody likes feeling attacked or intentionally embarrassed. Therefore, be nice but direct. If your coworkers are reasonable people, as most probably are, they will understand once you have explained the problem.

If your co-worker causing office noise doesn't see the problem, then you may be well advised to speak directly to the coworker's direct supervisor. A direct supervisor acts as a solutions enabler and a learning architect for employees reporting to him or her. As such, it is his or her responsibility to counsel the coworker creating the nuisance. In most cases, the noisy coworkers change their ways after getting reprimanded by their managers.

Lastly, you may also want to get yourself a speech privacy, or 'white noise', system. These systems can help cover up much of the distracting noise that comes from a busy office with noisy co-workers, which will decrease their ability to bother you and help you maintain your focus on your work.

Millions of people spend every day of their working lives in a busy office environment. One element of the working environment that can cause problems, however, is office noise. Many individuals have highly complex jobs based in an open-plan office and find it difficult to achieve their daily tasks due to noisy co-workers. One solution to the problem is to raise the issue with your boss and then talk it through with the co-worker in question. Another alternative is to request a speech privacy system which gives 'white noise' as a solution to a noisy and distracting work environment enabling you to get on with your work.
